On my “Best albums of the year” list are already numerous instrumental projects, many great soul releases but still quite a few rap albums. Now there is definitely one more on my list.
Sampa the Great has already hinted with the singles that something big is coming and indeed the 19 songs of “The Return” never disappoint in a second. The rapper, who was born in Zambia and grew up in Botswana, is reflective, self-confident and at the same time vulnerable.
Musically she also knows how to bring different influences under one hat: from cleverly incorporated African rhythms to classic rap, jazzy elements and a lot of soul you can find everything on “The Return”. She is not afraid of unusual song structures and tracks with a length not suitable for playlists.
A big compliment to Silentjay, who produced most of the album. Kwes Darko, Clever Austin (“Perrin Moss of Hiatus Kaiyote), Blue Lab Beats and Syreneyiscreamy also some of the songs.
