Tom Misch evolved from a bedroom producer on “Beat Tape 1” to a scene favorite with “Beat Tape 2” and a worldwide celebrated musician, producer and singer with “Geography”. Instead of ultimately becoming a pop star, he now goes in a completely different direction on his new project.
For “What Kinda Music” Misch teamed up with producer and world-class drummer Yussef Dayes. The result is often rather dark, raw, suddenly damn catchy, playful and musically always outstanding with a mixture of jazz, hip hop, electronic influences and soul.
Tom Misch explains: “Yussef comes from a more experimental background, and he has a lot of loose, crazy ideas. I know how to write a catchy melody, but with interesting chords and I have a good understanding of popular song forms, so I think I streamlined those ideas and made them accessible.” Yussef adds: “I’d like to think, in some small way, that this album has a similar impact for people too – everything feels so divided these days, it would be nice for people to hear the record and hear two very different musicians coming together and realize it doesn’t have to be that way.”
You can’t disagree with that and still it won’t be what many fans, who only came along through “Geography”, wished for. Fortunately, it doesn’t have to be.
