Recently it was announced that Terrace Martin, Robert Glasper, 9th Wonder and Kamasi Washington have formed the supergroup Dinner Party. Now their self-titled debut EP has been released.
As the musical backgrounds of these four masters of their craft already suggest, the seven tracks are a mixture of HipHop, Soul and Jazz. If you’re looking for the playfulness of the releases by Robert Glasper, Kamasi Washington and Terrace Martin, you’ll might be a little disappointed, because the straight beats from 9th Wonder set the tone. HipHop beats with a lot of soul are in the foreground also thanks to Phoelix, who contributed his vocals to four of the tracks.
“Dinner Party” doesn’t sound as if the quartet had been working on it for months, but much more like a spontaneous and extremely productive studio session (which is also shown in the video attached below). But this shouldn’t be meant in a negative way, because the result definitely convinces, as expected with these four. But it would be interesting to hear what would come out if they would work on an album for a longer time – maybe we will find out sometime.
